5 Steps to Adding New Content
I go through a 5 part process before adding files
to my very large Runtime directory. This is to ensure that Poser will run
smoothly.
| 1. |
Never install or unzip a file directly into
your Poser Runtime directory. Unless you have a very detailed
readme.txt you will not know where the files went. Instead create an
unzip folder and use it. For example, my Poser program is located at
C:\3D Programs\MetaCreations\Poser 4
and my unzip folder at C:\3D Programs\Poser Extras\Unzip.

Sometimes a file (usually a DAZ exe) will look for related object files
before installing. If it doesn't find the object, it won't install.
To get around this I browse until I find my Metacreations folder and it will
accept that and install into a Runtime folder that it creates. All DAZ
exe's (screenshots 2, 3)
have a browse option that allows you to browse to a folder of your choice.
On the old DAZ exe install, when it starts searching for installed
components, I just hit cancel. For Winzip
(screenshot 4)
you need to make sure that "Use Folder Names" is enabled.

Creating BUM's is the next
step. You need to make sure that your BUM"s are created before opening
the mesh. If you don't, Poser will spend a lot of wasted time looking
for them. Most times BUM's are clearly marked with "bum," "bump," or
just a "b" in the file name but this isn't always the case so to make sure I
read each file's readme.txt. This isn't a guarantee though and I have
been surprised by unexpected bum's upon occasion. To convert the BUM
you need to either download
Bonni's excellent BUM Action for Photoshop or open Poser and click on the Materials
Editor and convert each texture file.

Using Windows Explorer (edit,
move to folder), I then move all the texture files to their proper locations
under the Poser/Textures directory. You can drag and drop but I have
found that I make mistakes using that technique and placed files in
incorrect folders.

Next I use Correct Reference
to ensure all texture references to Character (cr2) and Prop (pp2) files are
accurate. Correct Reference is a wonderful application (available as
Freeware and also for sale at
Hogsoft 3D in a more
sophisticated version geared for Poser ProPack and Poser 5 users) that
corrects the paths to your textures, thus saving a lot of wasted time as
Poser chugs along trying to locate texture files. The freeware version
does not know how to differentiate between duplicate file names and will
choose the first one it finds so you do have to make sure that you double
check when it's finished running and if necessary open the cr2 or pp2 file
and correct it manually. However, I have found that more and more
character and texture creators are using unique file names and so that helps
cut down on the amount of duplication errors. A very detailed, easy to follow tutorial on using
Correct Reference can be found at
Hogsoft.com. |

Again, using Windows
Explorer, move all of the remaining folders and files into the correct Poser
directories and you are finished! |
